the purpose was to recover commitment to the effort in haiti. >>> and many toyota customers uneasy and so what is the company doing to ease customers. we'll talking to the general manager of toyota electronics next. >>> and a missing girl was found in florida. we'll have the details coming up. >>> welcome back. another big story we're following this morning, more bad news for toyota. it's upscale lexus suv was hit with a safety rating so bad that consumers are being told not to buy it. consumer reports gave the lexus gx 460 a don't-buy rating. the group says the vehicle's electronic traction control doesn't react fast enough and can't stop the vehicle from rolling over. it's the first time in nine years the group has issued that warning. this is the latest in a string of issues the auto giant is working to fix. the company said it is committed to vehicle quality and safety and trying to rin back customer trust. joining us is general electrical engineer for toyota. and let's talk about the latest thing to crop up. consumer reports telling consumers not to buy this vehicle until they fix it. wha

, everyone. >>> today, toyota is agreeing to pay a record fine stemming from its gas pedal problems. tom costello is in washington with more. good morning. >> reporter: today is the deadline for toyota to accept or fight a $16.4 million fine. the company is expected to pay up, the largest fine ever assessed by the government against a car maker. the government alleges toyota knew about sticking gas pedals last september, but hid the effects and issued a recall. toyota is facing mounting civil lawsuits as well as criminal investigations. a $16 million fine for toyota is really not significant, but it is yet another strike against the company's reputation. toyota recalled 2.3 million vehicles in january for the sticking accelerator. the company has recalled more than 8 million vehicles worldwide because of acceleration problems and braking problems. a government official tells nbc news by paying the full civil penalty, toyota is accepting responsibility for hiding this safety defect from nhtsa, the national highway safety administration, in violation of the law. it now has 30 days to write

-february. martha: toyota sales, despite all their problems, are booming. they've had recalls, they've had safety issues, they have had fines, and the japanese cars are still selling apparently like hot cakes. phil keating joins us from miami, trying to figure this out. phil, it is remarkable, it seems like everybody day you're hearing about another recall from this company. they just had a really strong month, right? >> reporter: yeah, february actually for toyota was one of its worst months ever but the company really bounced back in march with u.s. sales shooting up 41 percent, compared to march '09. generous incentives for all of the vehicles sold and leased. that's a big explanation, that amounted to about $2300 per vehicle. now, toyota's latest recall involving about 9000 lexus gp460s. toyota says about 5600 of them have been sold and repairs should take an hour. this is the vehicle consumer reports identified last week as maybe sussentable to -- susceptible to flipping over. one dealer explains toyota's perseverance through all this recent bad press with customers continuing to come into t
